Pre-breakfast doctrine discussion
Saturday morning, before I was ready to start my day, my Roo came to visit me and snuggled up for a few early morning minutes of conversation while my coffee was brewing. They just don’t cuddle that often as they get bigger each day (each minute!!) and so I was enjoying the unexpected visit and thinking it was just like old times. But of course it wasn’t, not really.
Roo had a few questions on his mind. No it wasn’t about video games or auditions, it wasn’t about school or hobbies, it was about salvation. Did I mention I hadn’t had coffee yet??? It was still brewing.
But children aren’t always ready for heavy conversation and when they are you must stop what you are doing and address the situation, because if you don’t you will lose the moment. So salvation it was.
Why did the Jews not accept Yeshua’s/Jesus’ authority? Why did Grandma not like the Church we go to, especially if she had gone there at first. What are denominations. What happens if you sin after you truly understand the sacrifice of our Saviour? Can you ever sin too much? Hard questions for a grown-up conversation, even harder to discuss with the innocence and naïveté of a child. But Roo has a good mind and a heart for the LORD and so we sat and worked through concepts as best we could.
And then it was over.
I always try to offer information in “bites.” A piece and then the question, “Does that make sense?” After three or four pieces of information I will check to see if he is “full” for the moment. If he has enough to process for a while. To overload a child is to risk the possibility that they will turn off, tune out and miss something or worse become dead to a topic.
Roo got what he wanted and was ready to move on. We started the rest of the day, me with coffee and the WORD, him with his daily concerns.
It is a blessing to have children. They make me think and rethink. Nothing can be taken for grated.
